MIAMI, Fla Oct 9-10: Summer is officially over in South Florida as light north winds greeted nearly 100 entrants for the 56th Annual Columbus Day Regatta. This is a two-day point-to-point event around government marks on Biscayne Bay.
Michael Carrington's Sweden 37 SUSIMI bested his seven-boat class with a strong upwind performance on Sunday to take line honors and leap frog to a corrected time first in Class PHRF 2.
According to Carrington, The new UK-Halsey MatriX mainsail was perfect! The boat never pointed higher or went faster." Not known to be a light air performer, SUSIMI finished 10 minutes ahead of the next boat and was bumping into boats in the faster class ahead. The nearly new Tape-Drive No. 1 matched up with the new main to form a powerful combination.
Mark Wood, of UK-Halsey Miami, sailed with Carrington and his crew in a local race a week prior to the Columbus Day race for a sail check and got introduced the Hillsboro Sailing Club fleet, which is a virtual club that's very active 30 miles up the coast from Miami. Hillsboro SC was well represented and had 15 boats in the Columbus Day regatta -- most of any yacht club! Well done HSC and Michael!
