John McWilliam started McWilliam Sailmakers in Crosshaven, County Cork, Ireland in 1971. The company prides itself on bringing new technology to the craft of sailmaking, but not at the cost of added expense or reduced longevity as is all too often the case. That's why McWilliam Sailmakers joined the UK Sailmakers group -- an international group of 40 sailmaking lofts that began in 1946 in New York as Ulmer Sails. (In the mid 1980s John Kolius became a partner and the company changed its name to Ulmer/Kolius Sailmakers. When John Kolius got out of sailmaking, the company kept its logo and shortened it's name to UK Sailmakers.) In 1978 John's brother Des joined the company, and has since taken over the day to day operations of the Cork loft. "Joining the UK group allowed us to tap into UK's Tape-Drive construction system and their powerful 3D CAD/CAM design program written by America's Cup wizard Jack Kleene," said Des McWilliam. "Our sails have proved to be the ultimate weapon for CHS, and our results speak for themselves. For affordable, race-winning sails that last, you must give us a call."
