Welcome to UK Sailmakers, City Island! The loft at City Island is the original home of UK Sailmakers. The company was founded by Charles and Charlotte Ulmer in 1946 as Ulmer Sails. Today the loft is owned and operated by Charles (Butch) Ulmer and his son-in-law, Kerry Klingler.Kerry is the head designer and races extensively. He has won the J/80 Worlds as well as the J/35 North Americans. His sails will make your boat faster!
To say the staff at City Island is experienced is a true understatement. Benchman, Tony Italiano, a member of one of City Island's most famous sailmaking families, has been making sails since the late 1940s.
Service manager Rick Sinclair is a fourth generation sailmaker.He enjoys racing all kinds of boats from Lasers to offshore keel boats. Commuting from Connecticut, it is easy for him to pick up and deliver sails in the Greenwich area.
Salesman Tom Nye is City Island's historian. He has worked at this loft for more than 35 years. As a life-long City Islander, he knows and is known by all yards in the area.
Salesman Matt Baldwin has been with UK Sailmakers since 2000 when he opened the Connecticut service loft in Norwalk. After five years he has consolidated with UK New York in an effort to concentrate on what he does best, provide unmatched service to his customers, and less time running the daily operations of a business. Matt will still represent UK throughout Connecticut traveling regularly from New York to Rhode Island. This will ensure great service with fast turnaround.
Salesman Joshua Bone has been racing with UK customers since 1995 when he hoped
onboard Jim Johnson’s old J130 “Sea Hawk” for the Chicago to Mackinac Race. Since then his focus has been racing primarily in one design classes, i.e. J24, J105, Farr 40, J35 and J80’s. Last year he joined forces with Kerry
Klingler and was his silver medal trimmer at the J80 Worlds in Sandhamn, Sweden. He can be a huge help to any team looking for that little extra speed or smarts out of their boat. He is looking forward to working with sailors in New Jersey.

The City Island loft is the largest loft in in the New York metropolitan area and is equipped to handle any of your sailmaking needs. Besides new sails, the loft repairs, cleans and stores a few thousand sails. Each Fall and Winter and make arrangements to pick up and deliver sails throughout the greater New York City area.

The loft is open for business from 8AM to 5 PM on weekdays and from 8AM to 12 Noon on Saturdays.
