UK-Halsey Sails Storm to the Lead at Block Island Race Week

UK-Halsey customers compiled an impressive run of finishes in boats under 40-feet at Block Island Race Week. Four customers won their divisions and five more finished either second or third. This is just one more example of how UK-Halsey excels in making sails for the boats that a majority of sailors race.
Along with the individual wins, the Mystic River Mudhead Sailing Association team won the three-boat team racing trophy all three team members have UK-Halsey inventories. The Mudhead team was made up of John Fries Evelyn 32 REMEDY, Wes Maxwells J/29 COOCH and Bijan Rasadis J/29 SHOWDOWN. The team competition was stiff with the second-place team made up of the 75-foot TITAN, the ILC 40 HIGH NOON and the Peterson 42 SETTLER.
UK-Halsey Mystics sail designer John Friers is the owner and helmsman of REMEDY, a boat he uses for testing new sail designs and concepts. In the around the island race we used an A3 (a full sized asymmetrical reacher) that was very fast and complemented our inventory of symmetrical and asymmetrical chutes well. REMEDY won PHRF Blue 2 for boats rating between 87 and 108, without having to sail the last race. Finishing third in that division was Iris Vogels Soverel 33 DEVIATION of Huguenot Yacht Club, which won her division in the previous Storm Trysail Block Island Race Week.
In PHRF Blue 3 (rating 111 to 123) UK-Halsey customers finished first through fourth. COOCH and SHOWDOWN finished first and second followed by Chris Hubbards X332 EXHILARATION and John Storcks Ericson 39 JONROB.
City Island Yacht Club sailor Ed Austin won seven of 10 races sailing his J/30 CHINOOK to win PHRF Blue 4 for boats rating between 129 and 135. In IRC Red 5, Storm Trysail Clubs Commodore Richard duMoulin won his IRC division with five firsts out of 10 races sailing his Express 37 LORA ANN. DuMoulin was tied for first going into the last day, but won the series handily on the breezy last day by winning the final two races. Randy Baldwins Express 37 CABADY, driven by his son Matt of UK-Halsey New York, was third. Boats in this 13-boat division included four Express 37s, two Tripp 36s, two Schock 35s, a Frers 41 and a Farr 31.
Race Week had an impressive showing of 16 J/109s sailing in one-design configuration. UK-Halsey customer Rick Lyall, who won his class in the 2004 race week, finished second sailing his dark blue boat named STORM. Some of our competitors openly commented on how much higher and faster upwind the UK-Halsey boats were. Brand new boat owner Alan Tannous sailing MELODY was ecstatic after winning a race during the week.
