J/44 HONAHLEE WINS HER CLASS IN ANNAPOLIS-NEWPORT RACE

HONAHLEE, a J/44 owned by H.L. Devore of Larchmont Yacht Club, won her class and was second in the IRC fleet in the 450-mile Annapolis to Newport Race. "HL" as he is known around Larchmont Yacht Club, was both navigator and skipper while his father-in-law, Past Commodore Howie McMichael, acted as helmsman and cook. Commenting about the race H.L. said, I was particularly pleased with my new Tape-Drive main and number three. Our race was tight with a very fast Chesapeake-based Beneateau 40.7. We won our class over the Beneteau by 14 minutes on corrected time and finished second overall behind a TransPac 52. We couldn''t have done it without our new UK sails. I am also very pleased with the (IRC) system and I encourage everyone to get an IRC rating and come join the competition." The race was a beat from the start all the way to the Chesapeake Tower (approx. 150 nm) and then a spinnaker leg from there to the finish (approximately 300 nm). Mostly mild conditions prevailed over the course
