The following is UK-Halsey Sailmakers' procedure for testing and then bringing into use new sail materials.

1. Pressure for improvement in sail materials typically come from ambitious customers. Most sail lofts make their sails from commercially available laminates so they are forced to pass this need on to the sail material manufacturers and wait for them to offer complete new products, some good, some not so good.

2. UK-Halsey Sailmakers' sail technology is advancing more quickly because it can independently use a wide choice of new materials in its unique TAPE DRIVE system. To identify and test advanced new materials a Technical Coordinator has been appointed by UK-Halsey International to liaise closely with the leading UK-Halsey Lofts and material suppliers. He also networks outside the sail industry seeking technical advances with the Universities, the Aerospace and Engineering Industries. This unique flexibility gives UK-Halsey Sailmakers a jump on the competition and UK's in-house independent materials testing avoids the use of poor materials.

3. UK-Halsey's Technical Coordinator gathers all the data and experience available both inside and outside the UK-Halsey Group on the materials currently in use and on new materials, does in-house independent tests and publishes the results to the whole UK-Halsey Group and other technical contacts for feedback, information and comment.

4. Where the technical advance is only a modification of a known item there may be an immediate switch to the new version.

5. Where new glues, fibers or films are incorporated that have not had long-term trials only the more adventurous lofts and customers will try be invited to try them and only then on the basis of scientific facts proven by independent testing.

6. If the experience gained for the UK-Halsey Group by these lofts' experience is good then the new material will be adopted by all or most of the UK-Halsey lofts.
