The diagram to the left shows the computer-generated load
paths arching between the corners of a sail. The diagram then shows how the tape layout of
Tape-Drive® conforms to these load paths. The fiber reinforced Tape-Drive®
tapes carry the primary loads while the yarns in the membrane pick up the secondary and
local aerodynamic loads. On many Tape-Drive® sails, the membrane includes an
extra layer of yarns at an angle to the horizontal. Called an X-Ply or Tri-Axial Yarn,
they further enhance the off-tape line strength of the sail. |
