Back in 2002, UK-Halsey Sailmakers developed the easiest way for sailors to learn the Racing Rules of Sailing by creating computer animations that show boats moving through common race course situations. For the second time in nine years we have updated the quizzes to reflect the quadrennial rules changes. This year we have one much more than just update the rules. The program is now a computer download, which gets updated regularly via your internet connection. As soon as we post a new quiz, program owners get a notice that an update is available.
The animated format is much easier to learn from than printed diagrams with arrows and numerous drawings trying to show a progressing incident. In the quizzes you see boats slow down as they luff and speed up when the sails are trimmed in. Spinnakers even come down as boats round marks.
The quiz answers help sailors learn the rules because they they follow the sequence on a protest form. After analyzing the animation, users go on to read the “Facts Found” followed by the “Conclusions and Rules That Apply”. In the text, each rule is hot linked so that rules can be called up on screen with a click of the mouse. The animations can be enlarged to full screen for easy viewing, or you can choose to view the animation along with the answer to the quiz – all on the same screen, no page flipping. This is truly the easiest way to learn the rules.
The cost of the program is $55 and it is available through our secure online store. Just click here. |

To
help racing sailors get familiar with the new Racing Rules of Sailing,
UK-Halsey Sailmakers will present a series of animated race course incidents
on our website. The objective is to have the viewer follow the action,
determine what rule or rules apply and finally decide who (if anyone)
was right or wrong. Answers will be available at another spot on the
UK-Halsey Sailmakers website.
