Sailmakers is proud to introduce the newest generation of our load
path technology sails, UK . In the upcoming days you'll see
our inaugural ads on page one of "Sailing World" and "Sail" magazines.
This development advances the Tape-Drive concept so much that the
words "Tape" and "Drive" are not used to describe the new process.
UK is a great a leap forward.
|
In
our patented and time-tested Tape-Drive sails, the custom-designed
load path structure is applied to the surface of a sail skin.
In UK , this structure is laminated inside and becomes
the sail skin. We eliminate the yarns that add nothing but
weight and cost to your sails. The result is a light and stronger
sail.

SWAN
WORLD CUP
UK Customers continue to do well
Porto Cervo, Sardina, Sept 10-15 -- In the nine times this regatta
has been run, a boat with UK Sailmakers' sails has won the event
three times. All of those wins were taken by Michael Vaccari's Swan
46 EUROSIA. This year EUROSIA won Class C, but corrected out to
15th in fleet. The fleet awards were dominated by the brand new
breed of Swans. Another outstanding performance was put in by Ben
James's 1972 designed Swan 48 JACOBITE that finished second in Class
D and 11th overall.
As usual the Swan Cup has not been shy in providing over 2,000 sailors
with a host of challenges from navigating the intricate shoreline
of the Costa Smeralda, happily delivering 90-degree windshifts,
to surviving in over 40 knots in the notorious Bisce Straits. Six
races were sailed with no throwouts. Whether a coastal race between
50 - 100 miles or a three mile windward / leeward race, the fleet
of over 112 Swans has provided a week of extraordinary racing.
John Brinkers from UK Sailmakers in Hamble, England wrote: "I just
returned from the Swan Worlds where I sailed on JACOBITE. She's
a lovely old boat and in great shape, but its really hard to hold
a lane off the line as she is relatively slow, although her rating
reflects that. Anyway we ended up 2nd overall in our class of about
50 boats so not too bad. (Her finishes were 1,1,7,3,1,2)
"The
first day saw 35 to 40 knots with a lot of breakages. Using our
new reduced size kite we managed to set a new speed record aboard
JACOBITE of 13.7 knots. This may not sound like a lot but those
of you who have sailed 15 ton Swans in 40 knots will know a fresh
change of underwear was needed at the end of the kite run."
UK Italy's Marco Holm praised the crew work on EUROSIA and JACOBITE
saying they were the two most consistent boats in the whole regatta.
Vacco Vaccotto drove EUROSIA to finishes of 4,10,2,4,3,1. Her sails
were Kevlar with carbon fiber tapes.
UK J/105s DOMINATE 2002 CHICAGO BOAT OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Of the
20 J/105s that qualified for the Chicago Area Three Boat of the
Year Series, the top three were UK customers. The Boat of the Year
award is a year-long series that covers more that 20 races. Winning
with a comfortable lead was George Petkovic sailing USA 370, followed
by Art Wong's CERTARE and Doran Candea's MESSY JESSY. What's even
more interesting about these results is that only four UK customers
qualified this year and three of them took home the silver. UK Sailmakers
provided the winning speed in this fleet.
The J/105 North Americans start September 20th in Chicago and 50
boats are expected. See the next issue of UK Sailmakers electronic
update for a story.
LARCHMONT
NOOD REGATTA:
UK TAKES OVER TWO CLASSES AND MAKES A SPLASH IN ANOTHER
LARCHMONT,
NOOD Regatta -- A new gunslinger came to town in the Henderson
30 fleet and the J/30 fleet at the Larchmont NOOD. For the first
time, UK Sailmakers customers won both fleets. In fact, this was
the first major Henderson 30 regatta won by Tape-Drive sails.
The Larchmont NOOD was primarily light air, with the wind never
blowing stronger than nine knots for the three-day event. Half
of the divisions opted to sail just two days since taking a day
off right after the Labor Day holiday can be difficult for some.
Neil Rattan's Henderson 30 LOVE LETTER won three races and took
second twice in the five race series. Seven Hendersons raced.
"Our downwind dominance was obvious," said UK Sailmakers's Kerry
Klingler. "In two of the three races that we won, we weren't in
the lead around the first windward mark. But our kite gave us
the speed to eat boats up downwind. We could sail deeper and the
same speed as others, or we could sail faster at the same angle."
Joe McCann's J/30 PADDY WAGON was the only boat with UK Sailmakers's
sails in the top five and she was first in the nine-boat class.
Joe is a new UK customer who just got his UK main and No. 1 genoa
this summer. "We are very happy with our new sails," said McCann.
"This was the third time we've won the J/30 East Coast Championships,
but this year we had better speed than ever before." One week
later PADDY WAGON sailed the J/30 North Americans and finished
seventh. McCann said, "I can't blame our finish on a speed problem."
In the seven-boat Express 37 fleet, Tape-Drive sails took all
the silverware. First through third in order were: SOULMATES (Adam
and Jenni Loory), LORA ANN (Richard du Moulin) and WALRUS (Al
Minella).
 |
At
the awards ceremony the Express 37 fleet continued to be
the loudest group. For the last four years this rowdy bunch
has thrown the winning skipper in the water as part of the
trophy presentation. A different boat has won this "honor"
in each of the four years the NOOD has been run at Larchmont.
This year it was Adam Loory's turn as the picture shows.

du Moulin presenting the Schumacher Trophy to Adam and Jenni
Loory, winners of the Express 37 East Coast Championship.
DuMoulin created the trophy dedicated to the memory of Carl
Schumacher, the designer of the Express 37, who passed away
unexpectedly this spring.
|
 |
Both
SOULMATES and LORA ANN sailed with UK No. 1s. These sails
are very light and took their shape even in Long Island Sound's
faintest zephyrs. Yet both boats have used the same sails in the
top of heavy No. 1 conditions and the sails have plenty of strength.
UK represents the next step in the evolution of Tape-Drive.
Instead of applying the load path structural members to a pre-made
sail skin, we fabricate the sail skin and load path structure
as one integral product. The load path yarns are laid between
the two Mylar films. For more information click on the UK
link on our home page .

Congratulations
to Laurie Stewart and the crew on his Oyster Lightwave 395
CHEN for winning overall award in the Royal Jamaica Yacht
Club's 40th annual Independence Day Regatta. CHEN's main rival
was another Carl Schumacher desiged boat -- an Express 37.

REMEDY
WINS MORC INTERNATIONALS
This
year the MORC Internationals were sailed as part of Annapolis Race
Week over the long Labor Day weekend. A light turn-out but fierce
in competition predominated the event's two MORC classes, consisting
of 13 boats in all. The racing, both boat for boat and in the corrected
times, was often incredibly close, as the measurement-based handicap
rule continues to attract top level crews and well-prepared skippers.
When the regatta closed, three MORC A boats returned to the dock
carrying the same number of total points. Once the spray dried,
and the spreadsheets were checked, the Mumm 30 BLOCKADE RUNNER came
out on top.
The MORC B class was won in convincing style by Bert Carp and the
crew of REMEDY, his custom Donovan 27. REMEDY posted a 1-1-1-1-2
in class and overall scores which earned her skipper and crew the
coveted Rudder Trophy, emblematic of first overall in the MORC International
Championship. The REMEDY crew included Scott Allan, Bert Carp, Garrett
Donovan, Jon Downey, Ryan Duffy, Seamus Duffy, and Bill Ward. The
humble Carp, who drove throughout the regatta, says, "Scott encouraged
us to build the boat (Donovan 27), made the sails, coached us all
for years, and called brilliant tactics over a range of conditions.
He deserves the credit, along with Jim Donovan who designed a 27
foot boat that can sail with 30 footers."

UK MIAMI HIRES RICARDO
VOCATURO: A SAILMAKER WITH DECADES OF EXPERIENCE
UK
Sailmakers Miami is pleased to announce the addition of Ricardo
Vocaturo to our sales/sailmaking staff.
Ricardo is a life long sailor. Born in Argentina he began sailing
at an early age in one designs including Stars, Snipes, Lightings
and Solings. He worked his way up to big boat sailing and sailed
on some of the best IOR boats in Buenos Aires.
At the age of 20 he began work as a sailmaker for Hood Sailmakers
and supported the sailmaking programs Hood set up for the Whitebread
Around the World Race.
More recently he worked for UK Sailmakers Argentina before moving
to Miami this year.
We're fortunate to attract such an experienced sailor to our company.
Our Spanish speaking customers will benefit from Ricardos'
bilingual skills especially since sailing terms can be difficult
to translate.
We welcome Ricardo and ask all our Central American and South American
customers to contact him for their sail needs.

THE
UK SAILMAKERS REAL TIME RACING RULES CD
The best way to learn the Racing Rules of Sailing
just got better!

We
hope you've enjoyed the rules quizzes on the UK Sailmakers web
site. We think they are a great way to help sailors learn the
racing rules.
Now we'd like to introduce the first edition of the UK Sailmakers
Real Time Racing Rules CD. It has special features to help you
analyze each quiz situation and the applicable rules in detail.
Along with all the animated quizzes, we've packed this CD with
tools to make learning the racing rules easier yet! For instance,
we've included all the Racing Rules of Sailing, all the definitions
and most of the appendices along with hot links in the text of
the answers for every rule or definition mentioned. The hot links
enable users to open a separate box on the screen with the exact
wording of the rule or definition referred to. This is much easier
than thumbing through the pages of the rule book.
The CD allows you to play the animations full screen with a button
to pause or resume the action as many times as you'd like. This
lets you study the relative positions of the boats before trying
to decide who is right and who is wrong.
 |
This is our first edition of the Real Time Racing Rules CD. It
is our intention to offer regular updates with new quizzes and
new features. Sailors who have purchased a CD will receive a preferred
rate on all updates.
To order a Real Time Racing Rules CD, go to the UK Sailmakers
Online Store at or
contact your local UK Loft. The cost is $40.
If
you would like to sample the rules quizzes already posted on our
web site, please click .
We are certain that the quizzes combined with the rule book, hot
links to the rules and the ability to start and stop the movies
all bundled together on our Real Time Racing Rules CD creates
the most innovative and easiest method to learn the racing rules
of sailing.
CRUISING
SPINNAKER VIDEO
Another
movie available from UK Sailmakers is our new 17-minute instructional
video
"The Cruising Spinnaker A-Z." The movie is a true "A-Z" treatment
because it teaches more than just how to jibe and trim the cruising
spinnaker. Viewers learn handy tips on how two people can hoist
and douse the cruising spinnaker, what kind of sheets work best,
what equipment is needed to use the sail, how to enlist the help
of the wind in moving the sail across the boat during jibes, how
to pack the sail into its bag so that it will launch easily, what
to look for when adjusting the height of the tack, and much, much
more.
Sailors can buy "The Cruising Spinnaker A-Z" on VHS cassette or
CD for $35 (shipping within the U.S.A. included) from the UK Sailmakers
online store or they can get it free when they buy a new cruising
spinnaker from their local UK Sailmakers loft.
Click
for a preview of the movie.
