AMERICAN
YACHT CLUB FALL SERIES
Loory Swims, Widmann Wins, and Olsson Nails the J/105s
RYE, NY Sept. 21,22 & Sept 28,29: During the two weekend regatta
the fleet raced in all conditions, from light and moderately shifty
to a blustery frontal passage to a dying northerly that produced
30 to 40-degree oscillations as the wind sputtered to next to nothing.
Racing was extremely competitive with the big boat circle getting
eight races and the small boat circle getting an incredible nine
races.
Carl Olsson's MORNING GLORY topped the 20-boat J/105 fleet with
a win in the final light air race. According to Joe Schultz-Heik
of HILARIA, which won the J/105 class at the Larchmont NOOD regatta,
"Carl's boat drifted faster than us on the last light air run."
HILARIA was barely in the lead before the last race was sailed.
Both of these UK customers had four first place finishes.

Seven
boats raced in the Farr 395 one-design
class -- the largest fleet ever for this new racer cruiser. Roger
Widmann's QUINTESSENCE, the only boat with UK Sailmakers sails won
the tie-breaker to take the class. QUINTESSENCE raced with a new
UK jib and Widmann said, " Right out of the bag, this is the
best looking and best performing jib I've seen of 26 years of racing."
According to UK's Kerry Klingler who called tactics and designed
the sails, the boat was just plain faster upwind and downwind. In
one race, when they were second to last around the windward mark,
Kerry taught the fleet a new trick when QUINTESSENCE passed all
but one boat in that downwind leg. "In the light air we put up the
small reaching spinnaker. It's reduced size allowed it to fill,
and everyone was sailing tight angles anyway," said Kerry.
In the level 72 fleet, the series started out close for SOULMATES,
but on the final weekend, that included three races in 16-23 knots
of wind and another in a shifty dying breeze, the team on Adam and
Jenni Loory's boat scored three firsts and a second to run away
with the series. SOULMATES sailed with the first ever UK genoa
in all but the three heavy air races. At the end of the series that
genoa had 34 races on it and its shape is still fast.
On a fun note, SOULMATES tactician Annie Atwood coined a new term
to describe the 30 to 40 degree lifts that were thrown at the fleet
on the last day of racing. She'd call out , "Here comes a Wonder
Bra" because the shifts lifted and separated SOULMATES from the
other boats. At the awards ceremony where SOULMATES won the award
for best combined finishes in both the American YC's Spring and
Fall serieses, Adam was dunked by the skippers of the second and
third place Express 37s. That swim followed Loory's dunking after
winning the Larchmont NOOD regatta three weeks before.
There were two UK sails used at the AYC Fall Series, and both
sails were on winning boats. Not a bad start for a new product.

OLD IOR BOAT KEEPS
WINNING WITH UK SAILMAKERS
Rich
Coar and Judy Judson's 22-year-old Talyor 34 CHAIKA has been racking
up some impressive finishes over the last two years since she
repowered with UK Sailmakers sails. "We replaced our inventory
over the last three years," says Rich, "and the boat is significantly
faster. Crew has been with us for 10 years and we all of a sudden
are looking a lot smarter thanks to our UK Sailmakers sails."
Coar and Judson are both vice principles in the New York City
school system so you know they are looking for durable speed.
Their enviable recent record includes: first in class at the American
YC Fall Series 2001, second in class at the 2001 Manhasset Bay
YC Fall Series, the 2001 YRA of Long Island Sound Fall overall
trophy for boats rating between 72 and 117 and first in class
at the 2002 Larchmont Race Week.

THE
UK SAILMAKERS REAL TIME RACING RULES CD
The best way to learn the Racing Rules of Sailing
just got better!

We
hope you've enjoyed the rules quizzes on the UK Sailmakers web site.
We think they are a great way to help sailors learn the racing rules.
Now we'd like to introduce the first edition of the UK Sailmakers
Real Time Racing Rules CD. It has special features to help you analyze
each quiz situation and the applicable rules in detail.
Along with all the animated quizzes, we've packed this CD with tools
to make learning the racing rules easier yet! For instance, we've
included all the Racing Rules of Sailing, all the definitions and
most of the appendices along with hot links in the text of the answers
for every rule or definition mentioned. The hot links enable users
to open a separate box on the screen with the exact wording of the
rule or definition referred to. This is much easier than thumbing
through the pages of the rule book.
The CD allows you to play the animations full screen with a button
to pause or resume the action as many times as you'd like. This
lets you study the relative positions of the boats before trying
to decide who is right and who is wrong.

CRUISING
SPINNAKER VIDEO
Another movie
available from UK Sailmakers is our new 17-minute instructional
video
"The Cruising Spinnaker A-Z." The movie is a true "A-Z" treatment
because it teaches more than just how to jibe and trim the cruising
spinnaker. Viewers learn handy tips on how two people can hoist
and douse the cruising spinnaker, what kind of sheets work best,
what equipment is needed to use the sail, how to enlist the help
of the wind in moving the sail across the boat during jibes, how
to pack the sail into its bag so that it will launch easily, what
to look for when adjusting the height of the tack, and much, much
more.
Sailors can buy "The Cruising Spinnaker A-Z" on VHS cassette or
CD for $35 (shipping within the U.S.A. included) from the UK Sailmakers
online store or they can get it free when they buy a new cruising
spinnaker from their local UK Sailmakers loft.
Click
for a preview of the movie.
