Here
are two great photos of the Farr 52s BEAR OF BRITAIN and CHERNIKEEFF
2 on a heavy air spinnaker run during the 2003 Admiral's Cup.
Both boats have full inventories of UK Sailmakers' Tape-Drive
upwind sails and spinnakers. Read pages 64-68 in the October
issue of SAILING WORLD for a good eyewitness account about the
series' distance race in which these two boats duked it out
during the windy 360-mile Wolf Rock Race.

SEND
UK YOUR RACING RULES QUESTIONS
The animated rules quizzes and our Real Time Racing Rules Quiz CD
have both been hailed as the best way to learn the rules of sailboat
racing. Yet people still have questions regarding the quizzes and
incidents they have encountered while racing. UK Sailmakers invites
you to send us your questions and we will answer as many as we can
on the UK Web Site. Even if you don’t have a question, you can
learn from the posted Q&A. If we turn your question into a future
rules quiz, we will send you a free copy of our Real Time Racing Rules
Quiz CD – a $40 value.
It should be clearly understood that our objective is to clarify and
help you understand the Racing Rules of Sailing. Our answers and responses
are not meant to conflict with existing decisions rendered by Protest
Committees or Juries. Remember that a Protest Committee or Jury obtains
input from a number of sources and arrives at "Facts Found". In this
case, we'll be taking your input as fact!

SAILS MAKING THE DIFFERENCE
The following letter came in from a customer of the UK Sailmakers
loft in Detroit, Michigan. Letters like these make our job a lot more
fun. We aim to inspire all our customers in the same way.
Dear Al,
I just wanted to drop you a line and thank you for helping make my
boat the fastest it has ever been. With a complete suit of UK sails
my boat DRAGON LADY (a 1981 Capri-25) seemed to come alive this year
at RYC (Rochester Yacht Club).
Dragon Lady's finishes in 2003:
1st in Division 4- Memorial Day Regatta
1st in Division 4- Spring Wednesday series
Tied for 1st (2nd in tie breaker) Spring Regatta Series
1st in Division 4- Summer Wednesday Series
1st in Division 4- annual Mid-distance "Rochester Race"
1st Overall "Rochester Race" - 28 boats
2nd in Division 4- Fall Sunday Series
Division 4 Overall Champion
Rochester Yacht Club Fleet Overall Champion
Having never won a series before; I can point to many things that
helped to put us over the top this year. But the number one difference
has to be your sails. They set easily, trimmed easier, and screamed
in all wind conditions.
If anyone asks me how I did it, you should know that "UK Sails" will
be the first words out of my mouth! We receive our trophies this Saturday
at our annual Cups and Flags night. We will definitely be drinking
one in honor of your fine UK team.
Cheers
Scott Baker
Elba, NY
Baker showed his appreciation even more by asking for a sail quotation
on a No. 3 genoa in a PS.

Ken
Rothaus' Beneteau 40.7 "AGELESS" jumped to life at
the Manhasset Bay Fall Series on western Long Island Sound with
upwind UK sails made of carbon, Kevlar, Technora. AGELESS
won four of the six races in PHRF Class 4. Second was Richard
duMoulin's Express 37 LORA ANN sailing with a UK No. 1.
"The main and the No. 1 held their shape perfectly in their
upper ranges. The puffy northwester tried to make the sails
change shape, but they were rock solid," said Butch Ulmer. |

Frank Pong's newest boat, JELIK, the Reichel Pugh 77 foot sled (ex
PYEWACKET) won the overall award at the just finished China Coast
Race Week. Her second place finish in the 335-mile Hong Kong to Hainan
Island Race and third in IRC A in the five race inshore series was
good enough to win the overall award by eight points over the second
place finisher. Mr. Pong's company owns the UK Sailmakers loft in
Hong Kong.
JELIK took line honors in the race, but the corrected time winner
was another old PYWACKET -- Roy Disney's first sled now renamed FFREE
FIRE.
Asian Yachting quoted local racing sailor Karl Kwok saying "Roy Disney
must feel good to know two boats from his stable will have a few years
of friendly rivalry on our side of the pond!"
News From Argentina
The first weekend in November proved a lot of fun for customers of
the UK loft in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Martin Busch finished second
at the Argentine Soling Championship and many UK customers won trophies
in the cruising regatta to Uraguay and back from Buenos Aires. The
35-mile race crosses the River Plata and on the first day there was
perfect breeze for jib reaching. The next day the 64-boat fleet sailed
back in variable wind under light spinnakers. The following boats
with UK inventories took home awards:

The
classic beauty of an Alden schooner can be seen in LION'S
WHELP, built
and owned by Phin Sprague, the owner of Portland Yacht Services
of Portland,
Maine. Her working sails were built by UK New York and featured
a lot of
classic sailmaking handwork and detail no longer found in
modern sails. Even
her carbon fiber spars are finished to look like they are
varnished wood.
LION'S WHELP was launched this spring and after a summer of
shaking down,
she is bound for the Caribbean. |
