UK-Halseys Dirk Manno has been excelling in the X-35 One-Design. His Mann O Mann has won numerous regattas including the Flensbuger Frhjahrswoche where he collected five firsts. At the Maior regatta in Kiel, he was much faster than the professional team from North Denmark, but one of his four firsts was thrown out for a technical infraction. Dirk has mastered boat set up and tuning for this new one-design class that is growing rapidly in Europe.

SECOND SAFETY AT SEA VIDEO POSTED |
In an effort to promote safe sailing, UK-Halsey will be running a number of streaming video clips and instructional text on safety at sea techniques on our web site. The second episode has already been posted. It shows two different ways to recover a man overboard while sailing upwind. In both cases the boat stays near the victim by tacking immediately. Click on this link to get to the video.
In May, just before the Volvo race tragedy UK-Halsey Sailmakers ran the first in a series of safety at sea video lessons. Presciently, it showed how to do the Quick Stop man overboard recovery when sailing with a spinnaker up, which is just what happened when Hans Horrevoets was washed overboard.
The next video will show a crew struggling as they do a quick stop with a spinnaker up in 20 knots of wind. This video will point out some of the things that can go wrong. |

UK-HALSEY BOATS SWEEP CLASS C AT 2006 MEXORC |
 |
| Above: OLE powering to windward. Below: FAR OUT in the foreground with BANDIDO above her. Jay Ailworth photos. |
Since switching to UK-Halsey, Antonio Elias' Joubert/Nivelt 44 OLE has won MEXORC every time it’s competed: 2000,2004, 2006. This year UK-Halsey’s John Bennett called tactics while sailing his third MEXORC with Antonio Elias. They were also joined UK-Halsey’s Mike Considine who trimmed main and Paul Exner trimming genoa.
The competition for second was very tight. Elias chartered his Farr 39 FAR OUT to Eduardo Saenz, which corrected over BANDIDO in the final race by one second to take second place. BANDIDO is a Frers 43 owned by Ernesto Amtmann.
All three boats used UK-Halsey load path sails, which included Tape-Drive, UK-Halsey Ultra and UK-Halsey Millenium. |

CLASSIC SWAN WINS IRC CHAMPIONSHIP |
Proving that IRC rates old boats and new boats fairly, JACOBITE, a 1973 Swan 48, won Class 2 at the Fortis IRC Championship sailed June 9-11 on the Solent. The class had 19 boats and the oldest boat and one of the newest boats had a tight battle for first. For the first two days the wind blew 18-25 and on the final day the wind calmed down to 8-14. Even though JACOBITE won six of the eight races, two of them were won by less than 30 seconds. Second place was taken by the Corby 35 ANTIX, which is an Irish Commodores Cup team hopeful. UK-Halsey’s John Brinkers was the helmsman on JACOBITE and said, “Obviously we are delighted to have won so many races but Anthony O’Leary’s Corby 35 ANTIX was tough competition. ANTIX is really well sailed, and seldom make mistakes.”
While easy on the eye with her long overhangs, Stephen and Benedict James’ JACOBITE is hard on the crew. There is not much room in her old-style cockpit and the large overlapping jibs are a bear to tack. It’s not often that the grinders get a mention but Tony Turnage definitely earned a steak dinner after his work short tacking to a three-second win in race four in 20-25 knots of breeze.
After winning the first five races in a row, JACOBITE ruined her streak with a sixth. While match racing ANTIX at the start, both boats were over early and had to return. JACOBITE faired well and sailed through the fleet to finish second, but since the first attempt at starting the race had resulted in a general recall, the Z Flag penalty was in effect; therefore, they were penalized 20 percent (four places).
More amazing was that JACOBITE used her older UK-Halsey sails including a 2001 Tape-Drive main for this windy series. She was saving her new sails for the Swan Worlds in Porto Cervo in September.

DURABILITY AND VERSATILITY: TRUE CRUISING REQUIREMENTS |
"Our Passagemaker 2 genoa is a very strong and versatile sail that maintains remarkably good shape even when furled one or two positions in heavier air. It served us well in the recent Swiftsure race, obviating headsail changes for a variety of wind angles and velocities. It performed well during a race last winter in a gale with gusts to 48 knots (pictured),” writes Ralph Lapp, owner of the Catalina 470 EXODUS.

NEWS FROM UK-HALSEY SYDNEY |
Congratulations Roger on his new Lightwave 38. We used Pentex Cruise Laminate on his main and self-tacking jib and a taffeta-backed mylar on his code zero. This is the second cat that we have put sails on for Roger and look forward to working with him in the future. Roger is now looking at a pole-less symmetric spinnaker that he can use without the mainsail to make short handed sailing more comfortable. Best of luck with your cruise to Queensland!

KITE SURFER CROSSES THE ATLANTIC. SAFETY VESSEL POWERED BY UK-HALSEY |
At the age of 43, Manu Bertin, the founding father of kite-surfing has lost none of his enthusiasm for a challenge. This spring he was the first person to successfully kite surf across the Atlantic Ocean.
He set out on April 26 from the island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands off the northwest coast of Africa and reached Guadeloupe in the Caribbean on May 16. To succeed, he used three different kite propelled boards and boats. For a mother ship he used a fast 50-foot catamaran powered by UK-Halsey sails.
For speed and to cover as much ground as possible Bertin used the kite-surfing board that he used to crossed the English Channel, the Mediterranean and the strait between Maui and the main island of Hawaii. While this was his fastest board, Bertin needed to stand on it, which he could not do for three weeks straight. For less stressful progress he sat on a catamaran made of two surf boards joined with cross beams and central seat. For eating and sleeping he had an inflatable with a canopy that was pulled by a kite. He was on one of these three kite-powered boards and never stepped aboard the mother ship.
Logistics, supplies and the two boards not in use were carried by the 50-foot catamaran BAIES DU MONDE, which was chosen for its speed. Bertin did not want to slow down and wait for the mother ship during the trip. This rapid TS 50 yacht was skippered by Pierre Corriveaud, the winner of the Jules Verne Trophy on the trimaran GERONIMO in 2004. BAIES DU MONDE, is equipped with full inventory of UK-Halsey sails. Skipper, Pierre Corriveaud reported being very happy with his sails while crossing Atlantic and especially being able to keep up with Manu Bertin's fastest board in strong winds.
