SEND UK YOUR RACING RULES QUESTIONS

The animated rules quizzes and our Real Time Racing Rules Quiz CD have both been hailed as the best way to learn the rules of sailboat racing. Yet people still have questions regarding the quizzes and incidents they have encountered while racing. UK Sailmakers invites you to send us your questions and we will answer as many as we can on the UK Web Site. Even if you don’t have a question, you can learn from the posted Q&A. If we turn your question into a future rules quiz, we will send you a free copy of our Real Time Racing Rules Quiz CD – a $40 value.
It should be clearly understood that our objective is to clarify and help you understand the Racing Rules of Sailing. Our answers and responses are not meant to conflict with exiting decisions rendered by Protest Committees or Juries. Remember that a Protest Committee or Jury obtains input from a number of sources and arrives at "Facts Found". In this case, we'll be taking your input as fact!

STORM SAILING PRACTICE

Sailing in mostly light air conditions on western Long Island Sound, UK’s Adam Loory and the crew of his Express 37 SOULMATES take every opportunity to practice for heavy air. When committees call off sailing because of too much wind, SOULMATES goes sailing so that the team will become more comfortable racing in big breeze. “It’s fun surfing down waves at 10-14 knots with the ounce and a half chute up,” said Loory. “And every time we’ve blown a jibe or rolled out with the heavy chute up, we learn either how to avoid doing it again or how to recover quickly from those messy situations.”

The last YRA sanctioned big boat race on western Long Island in 2003 was called off the night before because of a massive cold front coming through that November 29th. “Since we had our crew already lined up, which included the Storm Trysail Club’s Vice Commodore Richard duMoulin, I took advantage of chance to go out and sail with his storm sails”, said Loory. “It was the first time a storm trysail had ever been set on my boat, which I’ve had for eight years. The learning experience was great. We all wore safety harnesses and PFDs out of respect for the wind blowing 25-35 knots.”

For more information on setting and trimming storm sails, watch for the revised edition of the UK Encyclopedia of Sails to be released in the first quarter of 2004.

CONGRATS TO DAWN TREADER FOR WINNING THE PRESTIGIOUS NORT

Consistency was the key ingredient in Larry Cohen's DAWN TREADER picking up the honors for the 2003 Northern Ocean Racing Trophy for IMS Cruiser/Racers. With good results in the Annapolis/Newport and Marblehead/Halifax races and a second in Class and sixth in Fleet in the mandatory Vineyard Race, DAWN TREADER, a 1977 Swan 411, easily took top honors in the 2003 Northern Ocean Racing competition. Purchased by Cohen in 1998, the boat was made more competitive by modifying the keel and rudder and increasing the length of the boom by three feet. Those changes helped to bring the boat into the 90's. She sported a complete Tape-Drive inventory. Most recently she had a new Tape-Drive Carbon main and a new UK No. 1 genoa. The new genoa was a very fast sail. The spinnaker inventory consisted of a .6 VMG chute, .75 AP and a 1.5 reduced girth chute. Since buying DAWN TREADER , Cohen and his crew have compiled an impressive record:

1998 Annapolis Newport 2nd in class.
1998 Bermuda 3rd in class
1999 Block Island Race Week 3rd in class
1999 Swan North Americans 4th in class
2000 Bermuda 3rd in class
2003 Annapolis Newport 1st in class
2003 Halifax Race 4th in class
2003 Vineyard Race 2nd in class

Since owning this boat Larry has been sailing an abbreviated schedule of two events a year. Not bad for a '77 IOR boat. Last November Larry has purchased BROADSWORD a Swan 48. He is looking forward to campaigning the new boat. It will be a pleasure to sail a boat better suited for IMS. We all wish Larry the best with the new DAWN TREADER.

The Northern Ocean Racing Trophy, NORT, is the Stamford Yacht Club's blue water sailing award, conceived to induce participation in offshore yacht racing. The NORT is awarded to the combined point winner in both IMS racing and IMS Cruiser/Racer divisions for the following races: Pineapple Cup Montego Bay Race, Hemingway Ocean Race, Annapolis-Newport Race, Marblehead-Halifax Race, Storm Trysail Block Island Race, Around Long Island Race, and Stamford Yacht Club's own Vineyard Race.

Mandatory races: Storm Trysail Block Island and/or Annapolis-Newport Race and the Stamford Yacht Club Vineyard Race. Each yacht must race in at least three qualifying races including two mandatory races.

Ken King from Charleston, SC

My crew and I are overwhelmed by the results we have achieved with UK Tape-Drive Sails. We have moved from the back of the fleet to the front. The sails have allowed us to fine-tune our sail shapes to conditions far better than with our older Dacron sails.

I have used them extensively over the last year-and-a-half and they have held their shape beautifully with few signs of wear. Our genoas have allowed us to stay in control and balanced through a large range of wind speeds. The Tape Drives have put new life into our 1984 Sabre 38. Just ask our competitors!
