Malö Yachts of Sweden (www.maloyachts.se) builds quality boats with top quality components, which means they come standard with UK-Halsey’s Spectra Tape-Drive sails. Another attribute of Malö boats is that they are sturdy enough to cross oceans, but are still capable of a good turn of speed. To get the most speed out of the boat’s convenient roller-furling mast, Malö specified UK-Halsey’s VB Max Roach main, which is a roller-furling main with a full cruising roach supported by vertical battens. Most mains that roll into the mast are batten-less and have negative roach, which makes them perform terribly. Any boat with an in mast furler can benefit from upgrading to the VB MaxRoach main.

SAILS TOO BIG TO CHANGE? OR ARE YOU JUST TIRED OF THE EFFORT?
Top: Everything is huge on J Class Yachts. Shown is SHAMROCK V’s sistership ENDEAVOUR. Above: A 46-foot performance cruiser (Arcona 460) with Spectra Tape-Drive sails
Tired of the hassle of switching from cruising sails to racing sails? Wish you could have one set of sails to do both?      That’s why the 120-foot J-boat SHAMROCK has ordered new UK-Halsey loadpath laminate sails from our Hamble loft in England — which means UK-Halsey sails are simultaneously on an historic America’s Cupper and on a current contender (TEAM CHINA). SHAMROCK’s owners and crew wanted higher performance sails for the superyacht racing they do - without needing to swap to cruising sails for chartering, which pays the yacht’s bills. Not wanting to switch is understandable since SHAMROCK’s mainsail has a 140-foot luff, is 4375 sq.ft., and requires a crane to be moved. For the same single-inventory convenience on yachts under 70-feet, UK-Halsey’s Spectra Tape-Drive offers proven racing performance and cruising durability. Whether you have a J-giant, a J/Boat™ or something in-between, contact UK-Halsey for sails.

ROLEX MIDDLE SEA RACE
Congratulations to Arthur Podesa and his Beneteau 45f5 ELUSIVE for winning IMS 2 Division as well as taking fourth overall in IRC in the Rolex Middle Sea Race. The 607-mile race drew 64 boats that comprised some of the biggest and fastest racing monohulls on the planet, crewed by America's Cup stars and round the world race winners, from 18 different countries. This is the Bermuda Race of southern Europe.
Another UK-Halsey France customer to take home silverware was the Beneteau 40.7 LADY V, who finished second in IRC 2A and fourth overall in IMS. Cheers to both crews for doing so well overall, even against the professional crews of the SuperMaxis. ELUSIVE and LADY V sported a full sets of Carbon TiTanium and Carbon Tape-Drive sails.
The course is sailed counter-clockwise from Malta, north to the eastern coast of Sicily to the Straits of Messina, around the Aeolian Islands and the active volcano of Stromboli, west to the Egadi Islands, south towards the island of Lampedusa and then back to the finish at Marsamxett Harbor. Enroute, the crews take in an amazing diversity of landscape and sea conditions, all of which combine to create the attraction and challenge of the race.

BIG RESULTS IN THE BIG STATE: UK-HALSEY BOATS TAKE 3 OF THE TOP 4 PLACES IN THE TEXAS J/24 CIRCUIT
Doug Weakley sailing RED STRIPE at the 2006 J/24 Nationals. He finished second overall in the 2006 Texas Circuit.
UK-Halsey customers finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th overall at the 2006 J/24 Texas circuit. A total of 46 boats and 200 sailors took part in this year’s event. “This is a great result for UK-Halsey. Throughout the year, we have been re-designing and improving the UK-Halsey Texas J/24 One Design sails,” said Pedro Gianotti, the head designer and owner of UK-H Texas.
One of these top crews will represent the USA at the 2007 J-24 Worlds in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The Texas J/24 Circuit includes seven stops in Houston, Dallas, Austin, and other diverse venues throughout the state. This year, the second stop on the tour was also the J/24 US Nationals, which was held at Houston Yacht Club. Each stop showcased a full regatta, with at least six races over the weekend schedule. For UK-Halsey to dominate the top spots in the standings is a well-deserved triumph. Not only was this a great local result but a step forward for UK-Halsey's One Design program. If you demand quality and expect only the best for your program, take a glance at our online website and let us show you how UK-Halsey can help!

UK-HALSEY’S BUTCH ULMER WINS IN THE CARIBBEAN PRO-AM
The skippers of the 2006 Vineyard Vines Pro-Am sailed at the Bitter End YC. Front Row: left to right: Keith Musto, Butch Ulmer, Lowell North, Rod Johnstone, Bruce Kirby. Back Row: Tom Farquhar (Chief Umpire), Dave Perry, Russell Coutts, Paul Cayard, Dawn Riley, Ken Read, Tom Leweck, Barbara Farquhar (Umpire).

The Vineyard Vines Pro-Am Regatta at the Bitter End Yacht Club was sailed for the 20th time this past October. The event consisted of some fleet racing and some match racing. For the first time both Masters (peers of the racing world) and Juniors (reigning champions) sailed in IC 24's (modified J-24s).
The event is truly unique in that the hotel guests get to select with which pro they’d like to sail with and the skipper/crew combinations are changed every day. A lot of great sailors have been part of this regatta over the past 20 years and the Pro-Am honor roll includes such names as Ted Hood, Tom Blackaller, John Bertrand and Scuttlebutt Founder Tom Leweck. This year’s cast was no exception (see attached picture).
Masters and Juniors are teamed up in pairs and this year’s winning team was Paul Cayard and Keith Musto. Individual winners were Ken Read (Junior Match Race Winner), Paul Cayard (Junior Fleet Race Winner) and Butch Ulmer (both Masters Fleet and Match Race Winner).

SOUTHERN TURKEY'S WOODEN BOAT SHOW AND RACE
Above: It was all smiles on RANDA, the winning boat.

Below right: RANDA going to windward.

The Bodrum Cup International Wooden Yacht Regatta is one of the largest events in the world for wooden boats. This year, 106 wooden yachts attended and 75 of them raced the four-race series in the Gökova Gulf in Southern Turkey. The fleet included boats up to 120 feet (36 m). UK-Halsey customers finished first, second, third and fifth.
For the third time, the 28-meter gullet, RANDA, won the championship. Second was the 35-meter DRAGON FLY. Third place was taken by STS BODRUM, which is Turkey’s sole sail training ship.

SPECTRA/CARBON TAPE-DRIVE SAILS LOOKING GOOD
Here is the latest Waterline 50 with Spectra Tape-Drive sails. The owners of Isolabella are very pleased with their new sails and the service they got from the local loft in Sidney, British Columbia. Tim Knight of UK-Halsey Northwest wrote, "The other great service part of the project was that we used an air-less sprayer to apply both Bio-shield from Contender and SailKote from McLube. The sails are now protected from mildew and they roll much tighter on the furler and in the Leisurfurl boom than we have experienced in the past. We can offer this service for new or older sails that are properly prepared (professionally cleaned)."
The second photo is of an Arcona 400 also with Spectra Tape-Drive sails. If those aren’t the best looking sails...

USING STORM SAILS:
UK-HALSEY’S 5TH SAFETY AT SEA VIDEO IS ABOUT TO BE RELEASED
Using storm sails is the subject of the next safety at sea video that will be viewable on the UK-Halsey web site. Storm Trysail Club Commodore Richard du Moulin takes viewers through setting up and trimming the storm trysail and storm jib. He shows how to practice in light air and goes over what to expect in true gale conditions. Besides being Commodore of the preeminent ocean-racing club in the world, du Moulin is the three-time winner of the doublehanded division in the 630-mile Newport to Bermuda Race. The video is currently in post-production and will be posted before the end of the year. The sixth video in our series will be the care and feeding of inflatable life jackets.
The first four videos were shot at the first-ever hands-on Safety at Sea Seminar at the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y, in April 2006. The first three show the Quick Stop Man Overboard Recovery process when sailing upwind as well as when sailing under spinnaker, and the fourth covers how to deploy, inflate, right and climb into a life raft. Click here to see the videos.

LOOKING FOR THAT PERFECT PRESENT FOR YOU, YOUR SKIPPER OR YOUR CREWMATES?
Check out our on-line store for some essential gifts for your crew and yourself: the Rules Quiz CD, great duffels, apparel and more. We are shipping out orders the day they are received to get to you your gifts in time for the holidays. If you need anything sent express, send an e-mail to: store@ukhalsey.com, and we’ll let you know how much the cost for FedEx is.
The Rules Quiz CD is a great gift since the protest room is the wrong place to learn the racing rules, especially when the easiest and most pain-free method is using UK-Halsey Sailmakers Real Time Racing Rules Quiz CD. The CD is packed with animated quizzes, sound effects, exciting video clips, the complete rule book, the appeals, and a protest form you can print out when needed.
The quizzes help you learn the rules because you look at situations the way a protest committee would. The difference is that, instead of hearing two different stories about a situation, you watch an animation. After analyzing the video, you can read the “Facts Found” followed by the “Conclusions and Rules That Apply”. In the text, each rule is hot-linked so that you can call it up on the screen with a click of the mouse. The animations can be enlarged to full screen for easy viewing, or you can choose to view the animation along with the answer to the quiz and the text of any rule you have a question about – all on the same screen, no page flipping. Truly the easiest way to learn the rules. The cost is $45, or $25 for those who are upgrading from a previous version of the CD. A heck of a deal, considering all the effort and expense you put into going racing. Why leave an event with a sour taste in your mouth because a protest committee DSQ’d you?
