COPA DEL REY REGATTA TAPE-DRIVE POWERS BALEARIA TO THIRD
PALMA DE MALLORCA, SPAIN, July 25-Aug 3
-- BALEARIA, a new Grand Soleil 42, came out of the box screaming
to finish third in the IMS 500 class against the in best and newest
boats in the Mediterranean at the Copa Del Rey. Competition was
tough with many of the top boats using paid professionals from the
highest level of the sport. Top name pros from the last America's
Cup inlcuded Joechem Schuemann and Andrew Cape of ALINGHI and Tomasso
Chieffi, tactician for ORACLE. Anyone who has sailed the Spanish
IMS circuit knows the fleet is peppered with multiple world champions,
gold medallists and America's Cup sailors.
BALEARIA's Tape-Drive sails turned a lot of heads and made sailors
take note.
With a rating that straddled the break between the big boats in
the IMS 500 class and the smaller boats in the IMS 600 class, BALEARIA's
owner Antonio Gorostegui thought that he would do better as the
smallest boat in the big boat fleet. For the most part his gutsy
gamble paid off. BALEARIA was the only boat under 52 feet to finish
in the top five of the IMS 500 class. First went to CAIXA GALICIA,
a Grand Soleil 56 and third was the King of Spain's Judel/Vrolik
56 named BRIBÓN.
Gorostegui and crew won three races and their score line after nine
races was: 11,2,3,16,1,3,1,2,1. They were only five points out of
second and 15 points ahead of fourth.
Antonio Gorostegui said, "We had such a great regatta thanks to
an expert crew, wonderful boat and the best sails I ever sailed
with. The mainsail is the best I ever seen and the spinnakers are
really fast in all conditions. I worked closely with Andy Longarela
on the sail designs and the result is clear - we were the fastest
42-footer in the history of the Copa del Rey."

TARTAN
10 NORTH AMERICANS
UK WINS ITS FIRST TOP TITLE
CLEVELAND, OH Aug 7-12th: Rick Strilky's US, dominated the 45-boat
fleet at the 25th T10 North American's sailed out the Cleveland Yachting
Club. This is the first national championship won by a boat using
UK .
As soon as Strilky finished the sixth and final race, he called Pat
Considine of the UK Sailmakers in Chicago to tell him the good news.
About his sails, Strilky said, "Those sails are the greatest! They
are F*@#ing fast!"
Strikly and his unpaid crew, which did not include not a single marine
industry professional, dominated the Tartan 10 North Americans the
old fashioned way: time in the boat, a well-practiced crew and new
sails for the biggest regatta of the summer. The second place boat
was crewed by one of the top hired guns on the water and three of
his handpicked professional friends.
With the throwout calculated, US beat the second place boat by two
points, but if a throwout was not used, US would have won by a whopping
14 points. Below are the score lines for the first and second place
boats. For full results go to: www.tten.com/2003/Results.htm
1st: US: 3, (6), 1, 3, 6, 4 17 points total
2nd Voodoo: 5, 1, 7, 4, 2, (18) 19 points total
