UK-HALSEY RULES QUIZ PROGRAM: A GREAT LAST MINUTE HOLIDAY PRESENT
As a download, the UK-Halsey Rules Quiz program can be delivered almost instantaneously — no waiting for your package to arrive or get lost in the holiday crush. We have been working feverishly for the last four months updating our renowned animated rules quiz program in time for the new rules that take effect on January 1, 2009. Currently we are pre-selling the program that will be ready just before Christmas Eve.

Yes, some of the quiz answers have changed because of the 2009 rule changes. Yes, some of the animations have been redone to reflect such things as the change from a two-boatlength zone to the three-boatlength zone. Yes, we have included all of the new rules of Part Two of the rule book. And yes, advances in programming have made using the quizzes easier. And yes the program runs on both Macintosh and PC computers.

BUT there are two HUGE differences. The first is that you can run the animations FULL SCREEN. This is a big improvement and a huge advantage over the free online versions of the quizzes. See the pictures below for the BIG difference. Seeing the animations full screen makes understanding the situations much easier. The bigger your computer's screen, the bigger the "Full Screen" view will be.

Secondly, the new program includes membership in the Rules Group Forum. Information posted to the Rules Group Forum will only be available to members. If you want to have the upper hand rules-wise, this is the group to be a member of. As UK-Halsey’s Butch Ulmer says, “A good understanding of the rules is worth two or three places in every major regatta you sail in.” For $55, this is a “no-brainer.”

UK-HALSEY’S RULES BLOG GOES PRIVATE
We hope that you've enjoyed the racing rules blog for the short time it has been around. It's about to change names, formats and availability and we wanted to make you aware of what we're doing and why we're doing it.

One of the things UK-Halsey has been working on feverishly is updating and re-writing our animated rules quizzes so that they conform to the new rules. These updated quizzes will be available free of charge on our website and the more sophisticated version of the quizzes will available for sale, this time as a download instead of on a CD. This download version will be loaded with features, the best of which will be that all updates can be done with the touch of a button.

We also decided to form the UK-Halsey Rules Group and to provide a year's membership in the group as part of the purchase of the rules quiz update. Members of the Rules Group will have access to a private forum (which will replace the blog). The forum will give serious sailors a place to ask questions, pose situations and describe incidents that involve the rules and have them responded to by one or more experts. Subscribers will also be able to read and comment on other member's input and receive group, as well as, individual advice. We will have commentary from Rob Overton and Bryan Willis (names you've already seen on our blog), US Sailing Judge Mary Savage, America's Cup PRO Peter Reggio and our own in-house rules expert, Butch Ulmer. This has been described by some as "having your own sea lawyer on retainer."

Given the free wheeling nature of the forum format, we concluded that we had to keep the number of members manageable; therefore, it will only be available to those who purchase the Rules Quiz program.

The racing rules are a tough subject and the more serious the competitor, the better his or her knowledge of the rules has to be. It is our intention to make this forum a truly unique source for rules information. We hope you will join us!

To purchase the Rules Quiz program and join the Rules Group, go to the UK-Halsey on-line store. Previous owners of the Rules Quiz CD will be given a discount towards the purchase of the new Rules Quiz program and Rules Group membership. A first time purchase of the Rules Quiz program costs $US 55, $40 for those updating from the CD version. Given the work and expenses to maintain the Rules Quiz program and forum, there will be a lesser annual renewal fee.

CHINA CUP INTERNATIONAL REGATTA

The second annual China Cup International regatta was sailed Oct. 24-27 in Shenzhen, a city of 14 million people just north of Hong Kong. Fifty boats in three classes raced under IRC, a local handicap rule (HKPN) and in a 33-boat Beneteau 40.7 one-design class. Thirty of the 33 Beneteaus sailed with UK-Halsey Tape-Drive sails and the Tape-Drive powered boats won all the top spots. Sailboat racing has grown quickly in China thanks to the country’s booming economy.

A recent article in sail-world.com about the growth of boating in China stated, “Ten years ago China did not have a single yacht club. It now has 58, with the largest one having more than 600 berths. More than 50 marinas are under construction around the country and Expo 2010 Shanghai will support both the development of the industry's infrastructure and the construction of five marinas to be finished by 2010.”

The Chinese Yachting Association organized the Beneteau fleet where the boats were chartered by teams across China and around the World. Competition in this class was fierce with four teams vying for first going into the last race. TEAM KARASU from Japan won the tie-breaker with TEAM NORMAR from Norway to take the China Cup. Third went to KOUFU, also from Japan.

THREE BOATS WITH UK HALSEY SAILS FINISHED IN THE TOP 5 AT THE TEXAS CIRCUIT
Stuart Lindow finished second overall in the Texas Circuit and won the Canyon Lake regatta, which qualified him to sail in the 2008 J/24 Worlds. Doug Weakly finished third overall and Corey Harding was fifth. Here is Stuart Lindow’s report on the season.

“Two years ago, I decided that it was time to commit to improving and racing my J/24 on the Texas circuit. After many hours of crew training and boat work we started to see some promising results. I slowly provided my crew all the necessary tools to become competitive, new hardware, winches and running rigging. The addition of a new mast and boom changed the boat. Upgrading the boat showed my commitment to the project and the crew responded in turn by bringing up the level of their game.

Our goal the first year was to finish in the top five. We did not accomplish it but were close — we finished sixth.

After many years of telling my crew, "When you learn to tack the boat, I will buy new sails," it was time to take my racing to the next level.

In spring of 2008 I decided to purchase a complete set of UK-Halsey sails for USA 814. I must say that my boat was now in a different place. Our training and boat upgrades made a huge difference, but there was more to gain. The UK sails made the difference. Most of the year it blew 18 to 25 and our performance improvement was apparent from the instant we put up the new sails. The main and jib are PERFECT!!!

Later in the year we finally were able to work with the genoa. WOW, what a difference it made. I am very happy with my choice with Pedro Gianotti and UK-Halsey Sailmakers.

I estimate that after the boat and crew are in order, the sails make 25% of the advantage. You must spend time on the water in many different conditions. The key is to reproduce the settings for every condition quickly. If you can do this consistently and be the first boat to do so, you will always have the advantage early. That is always a position you want to be in!!!

If you are serious about racing, plan your attack and commit to the game and buy UK. Any sailing program will improve using UK-Halsey Sails. Every question I had and every request I made was happily addressed by Pedro.

This year I reached past my goal finishing second in the Texas circuit and winning Canyon Lake stop on circuit stop to qualify for the Worlds. My crew and I are very satisfied with our results.

I look forward to my next set of sails that will be used for the J/24 World Championship in May of 2009 in Annapolis, MD. I proud to carry the UK name,” wrote Lindow.

And here are more words of praise.

"We had another great year using UK-Halsey sails on our J/24,” wrote Doug Weakley (USA 3836). “We had great results early in the year, using the jib in many cases. The UK jib is great as it can power up quickly in the lulls and flatten out with little adjustment on the car and halyard. The genoa shows very little wear after one full season of Circuit and club racing. The shape is still excellent and is ready for another season. We've never been faster, thanks to UK Halsey."

"We had never really made gains downwind until we bought a UK-Halsey spinnaker,” said Corey Harding (USA 2017). “Now, with a full set of UK sails, the boat is fast all around the course. We are on our third season with UK-Halsey and the results with these sails have been great!"
